Are you are a writer or translator with an interest in the Asia Pacific Region? If so, there is a great conference coming up this October 22-24, in conjunction with, and prior to the Ubud Writers and Readers Festival Oct 25-29.
Asia Pacific Writers and Translators Network Inc was originally an informal network known as the Asia-Pacific New Writing Partnership. It began in 2005 with seed funding from the Vice Chancellor of Griffith University. It was conceived as a broker of collaborative literary research projects with other universities around the Asia Pacific region. It grew into a think tank of individuals rather than institutions, though some held senior academic posts. Read more here
Since then a number of conferences have been held in New Delhi, Hong Kong, Singapore, Perth, Bangkok, Manila, Guangzhou.
The conference format is different to any I have experienced. Workshops, panels, presentations, dinners, readings, launches provide a place where emerging writers, translators and international authors can mix freely and exchange ideas.
As their website says:
These gatherings are unique in Asia: neither 100 per cent academic, nor duplicating the superstar nature of writers’ festival, the conferences provide opportunities for the region’s writers to meet each other and discover commonalities. They also provide a springboard to new readers around the region—and well beyond.
I attended in Hong Kong and Bangkok and was both times impressed by the calibre of writers involved, the excellent presentations and workshops, and the opportunity to get to know fellow writers from the region.
I’m also running a week long writer’s retreat prior to the APWT Conference which will deliver you right to the door of your North Bali accom. After the conference all you have to do is sashay down to Ubud to top off your literary feast!
