It’s the time for resolutions again and isn’t it lucky we get to have another go every time New Years comes around. There’s no point beating yourself up about not writing as much as you wanted in 2010, but how you fared may make you savvy about setting more realistic goals. I like the word count method. If you commit to writing 500 words a day you will usually write much more. I’m upping mine to 1000 for 2011 and I worked out if stick to it that’s 28,000 a month and times by three months, is 84,000 which is way more than I need. So far I have around 40,000 words done of my travel writing memoir so I only need that again to finish. I can knock that over in a month and a half easy. That’s why I like the counting method. It breaks everything down into do-able chunks and gives you a sense of achievement and progress.
One of our Draft Busters just told me she is going to stay home and write her way into this New Year instead of going out to celebrate. What a great idea! She’s going to hit 2011 already writing. Forget those awkward slobbery kisses from yahoo’ing drunks or feeling sorry for yourself if you are home alone watching reruns of Friends. Just write. It’s the cure for everything and doesn’t cost a cent. Happy New (Writing) Year!
